at the age of 88, was a pioneer in the depiction of the structures of biological macromolecules. He was caught up in the subject 36 years ago, when Scientific American asked him to illustrate John Kendrew's December 1961 article on the first protein structure, that of sperm whale myoglobin. This was followed by illustrations for David Phillips' November 1966 Scientific American article on the first enzyme structure, that of hen egg lysozyme. In 1968 he coauthored The Structure and Action of Proteins with Richard Dickerson, creating a style that was instantly recognizable and that contributed much to the way in which later computer programs depicting protein folding were designed. But Irving Geis was more than just a molecular draftsman. His

Correlates of Artistry Performance Scores in Preadolescent Rhythmic Gymnasts
This study examined the association between physical abilities, anthropometric characteristics and artistry performance scores in Greek, national level, competitive rhythmic gymnasts. Forty-six preadolescent gymnasts (aged 9.9±1.3 years) underwent a series of physical fitness (balance, flexibility, muscular power and endurance, sport-specific high intensity shuttle run performance) and anthropo...
متن کاملA Phenomenological Study of the Art of Occupational Therapy
If research evidence is to guide practice, the literature must reflect the art as well as the science of Occupational Therapy practice. The purpose of this research was to provide insight into the phenomenon of professional artistry and its meaning to Occupational Therapists. A phenomenological approach was used to collect data from three Occupational Therapists using in-depth interviews. Moust...
متن کاملConcept-Based Retrieval of Art Documents
This paper presents our work on the retrieval of art documents for color artistry concepts. First we show that the query-byexample paradigm popularly used in content-based retrieval can support only limited queryability. The paper then proposes a concept-based retrieval engine based on the generative grammar of elecepts methodology. In the latter, the language by which color artistry concepts a...
متن کاملProtein Calligraphy: A New Concept Begins To Take Shape
The ability to assemble molecules into supramolecular architectures of controllable size and symmetry is a long sought after goal of nanotechnology and material engineering. Proteins are particularly attractive for molecular assembly due to their inherent molecular recognition and self-assembly capabilities. Advances in the computational prediction of protein folding and quaternary assembly hav...
